The Different Stress Tests

There are several different types of stress tests. Your stress test experience will be different based upon the type of stress and the type of imaging. There are several different kinds of “stress” that can occur with a stress test. Imaging may or may not be part of your stress test.
Pharmacologic Stress Test With Dobutamine
The dobutamine stress test helps evaluate the heart. It is often used when exercise stress or other forms of pharmacologic stress are not possible.
What is a Pharmacologic Stress Test?
If you cannot exercise a pharmocologic stress test may be an option. Adenosine, dipyridamole (Persantine) can dilate your heart's blood vessels and determine if there are blockages.
Exercise Stress Test (With Nuclear Imaging)
A nuclear stress test combines exercise with nuclear imaging of the heart.
Exercise Stress Test (With Echocardiographic Imaging): The “Stress Echo”
The combination of exercise stress testing and imaging with an ultrasound, or echocardiogram provides an accurate and noninvasive way of detecting coronary artery disease.
Exercise Stress Test (Without Imaging)
Most stress tests involve some form of exercise, such as a treadmill. An exercise stress test is used by many doctors to evaluate your heart and your risk for a future heart attack. This article describes what exactly happens during an exercise stress test.
